About Unsuited.
Unsuited began as a rage blog by me, a disillusioned ex-private practice lawyer. Law school and private practice had been profoundly disappointing in so many ways that I was afire with the need to openly talk about my experiences, and save someone else from the same kind of soul crushing. And if along the way, I could fiind other Big Law escapees who were trying to figure out what to do next, so much the better.
Since then though, my vision for Unsuited has evolved. Because I've changed. And so what you'll find here is me thinking out loud. Sometimes about the law, but more broadly, about work, facing mid-life and what it means to try to build a slow life.
Enjoy.

Full disclosure: This is not a photo of me. But it is a photo of a black woman (which I am) with amazing big hair (which I used to have but don't now because of the perimenopause). One of these days, I'll get around to replacing with the real me.
In the meantime though, let me introduce myself. Afro-Caribbean, woman, single, child-free, pet-free, urban dwelling professional. Lover of dogs, tropical beaches, Twizzlers and books. Daughter, sister, rich auntie supreme, ride or die friend. Passionate about fairness, equity, diversity, and the state of the environment. Kitchen and garden dabbler.
The Timeline
Trinidad and other Worldly Wanderings
Edmonton born, Trinidad raised, U.S. schooled. Decamped from New York City to Toronto when visa issues came calling.
Law School
Apply and get into to law school because my boss said it was good idea and I had zero clue of what I wanted to do in life. Also, at 32, medical school seemed too long of a time to commit to being a poor student.
Private Practice Years
Opt out of hire back at a Bay street firm. Dabble in law adjacent work including policy and document review. Try private practice again at a boutique law and conclude definitively that private practice is not for me. Quit. Strangely little panic ensues about what to do next.
Career Nomading
Fall into legal tech i.e. document review. Still harbour private practice rage and regret. Unsuited is born but with many long stops punctuated by fewer starts.
Unsuited v2.0
Post-pandemic fearlessness and zero f***s to give. Life made a mess of me and I decide to write for the love of writing and to explore big ideas.
